Have you become cynical?

I’m looking at you,

Observing you,

Seeing you,

Listening to you,

Hearing you

Loving you,

And it feels like you’ve become hardened,

It seems like you’ve become cynical.

Like you’ve become many of the things we said we will never be.

No thanks to the blows life has dealt you.

No thanks to the hurts, disappointments and pains you’ve lived

No thanks to a world of many mean-spirited, selfish, greedy and deceptive men

No thanks to a world where wolves in sheep’s clothing abound

No thanks to a society that takes the dreams and aspirations of the young

And makes a joke and caricature of them.

No thanks to a system that not only doesn’t work, but also tries to force you not to.

No thanks to an insane world filled with injustice and man’s inhumanity to man.

No thanks to a world that is as harsh as it’s uncompromising

No thanks to a world that overburdens the shoulders of its young and trashes the achievements of its elders.

And so you’ve been tempted to become hardened

So, you’ve been pushed to become cynical.

To become many of the things we said we will never be.

But, my dear, we should stand firm and keep our heads above the ground.

We should continue to resist and fight the negativities that abound.

We must look out for and hold on to hope, to faith and to love.

We must give ourselves the freedom to be and to do that which makes us happy.

We must not lose our joy, our peace or our laughter.

We must identify and reject that which is not in heaven’s plans for us.

We must remember that our emotions are and must remain temporal, and we must know not to take decisions that could alter the course of our lives based only on temporal emotions.

We must learn to find an oasis and listen to the gentle lullaby of that quiet place within

And you must not, in any way, give it to the cynicism and  negativity that threatens to overwhelm us.

No matter what curveballs life throws at us, we must fight to hold on to positivity, joy, to laughter and as my mum would say with a twinkle in our eyes.

And, every day, I make myself a promise to remember not to allow the difficulties of life turn me into a cynical and hardened soul.
